Germany sets gas levy on consumers to help importers at €2.4c/kWh

Trading Hub Europe, which operates Germany’s gas market area, has set the gas procurement charge at €2.4c/kWh (€24.2/MWh). It charged from October 1, 2022 on all gas quantities withdrawn daily from a balancing group for withdrawal points with registered power metering (RLM) and for withdrawal points with standard load profiles (SLP). The levy will be accompanied by a reduction of the sales tax on gas to 7%.

Earlier in August 2022, the German government introduced a levy on gas consumers from October 2022 to April 2024 to help suppliers hit by soaring gas import prices caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine given their critical roles for the country's energy supply. Gas importers will be able to access the levy proceed by applying for compensation to Trading Hub Europe. Companies are entitled to claim 90% of the actual additional procurement costs, and only for existing contracts.
