Germany selects three new offshore wind areas with a capacity of 1,880 MW

The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) of Germany has enacted the 2nd Wind Energy at Sea Ordinance (2nd WindSeeV), approving the suitability of three areas in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the North Sea for the development of 1,880 MW of new offshore wind capacity. Determining the suitability of the areas is a prerequisite for the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) to tender areas for offshore wind in the EEZ. The area N-7.2, which is located 85 km northwest of the East Frisian Islands and could host 980 MW of offshore wind turbines on a area of 58 km2, is expected to be tendered by the BNetzA in 2022. Commissioning could take place in 2027. The areas N-3.5 and N-3.6, which are around 40 km north of the East Frisian Islands and could accommodate a total of 900 MW of offshore wind turbines on a area of 120 km2, shoud be auctioned off by the BNetzA in 2023. The wind turbines should enter into operation in 2028.
