Germany secures power link with Denmark from 3 GW offshore wind project

Germany has signed an agreement with Denmark to secure a power link to the planned 3 GW Bornholm Energy Island offshore wind hub, located in the Danish part of the Baltic Sea. The planned energy hub, located near the island of Bornholm will  link several offshore wind parks by 2030 in the Baltic Sea with enough generating capacity to power 4.5m German households. The hub will be connected to the German grid via a 470 km power cable. This agreement comes as Germany is trying to diversify its power supplies and reduce dependency on Russia.

Simultaneously, following an agreement between the different Danish political parties, the Bornholm Energy Island capacity has been increased from 2 GW to 3 GW. The Bornholm Energy Island offshore wind hub is part of Denmark’s broader plan to increase domestic offshore wind power production five-fold by 2030.
