According to the German offshore wind industry, 43 new offshore wind turbines were connected to the grid in the first half of 2016, with an overall capacity of 258 MW, raising the total number of offshore wind turbines connected to the grid to 835 and the offshore wind capacity to 3,552 MW. Another 54 turbines, with a capacity of 324 MW have already been built and are due to go on grid shortly, while foundations have been built for a further 142 turbines. A further 700 MW could then be fed into the grid in Germany during 2016.
At the end of 2015, offshore wind capacity reached 3.3 GW in Germany (only 7% of total wind capacity). In early July 2016, the German government proposed capping the expansion of offshore wind power capacity between 2021 and 2025, limiting offshore wind installations to 3.1 GW to keep step with the construction of new high-voltage power lines. In 2021 and 2021, around 500 MW per year should be added in the country.
