Germany greenlights three North Sea zones to tender 5.5 GW of offshore wind

Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) has confirmed the suitability of three North Sea offshore wind areas totalling 5.5 GW of capacity, to be put up for tender in 2024. BSH has thus green-lighted the N-9.1, N-9.2 and N-9.3 zones, which can now be auctioned off.

Area N-9.1 located off the Dutch island of Ameland and off the German island of Borkum covers 158 km2 with a installed capacity of 2 GW. Area N-9.2 also located off Ameland and Borkum covers 157 km2 with an installed capacity of 2 GW too. Finally, Area N-9.3 has a size of 106 km2 off the Dutch island of Rottumerplaat and off Borkum with a potential capacity of 1.5 GW. The tender will be held by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) later this year.

As of the end of 2022, Germany had a total wind capacity of 66 GW, including 8.1 GW of offshore wind. Germany targets to reach 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, 40 GW by 2035, and at least 70 GW by 2045.
