Germany drafts bill to accelerate geothermal expansion

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy initiated the hearing for a draft law to remove obstacles under licensing law to the development of geothermal energy and the expansion of large-scale heat pumps. The Geothermal Acceleration Act aims to achieve a noticeable acceleration of the procedures, particularly to those installations that use lake and river water, wastewater, unavoidable waste heat or air. The bill also seeks to improve the approval and construction time of pipelines that bring heat from the producer to the end customer, with the competent authority being expected to decide on the approval within one year. The bill is expected to represent a significant relief for business and industry.

Germany targets at least 80% of renewables in power consumption by 2030, and 100% from renewables by 2035. At the end of 2024, the country had a total installed capacity of 257 GW, of which geothermal only represented about 50 MW.
