The Elbehafen LNG terminal, located in Brunsbüttel (Schleswig-Holstein) in northern Germany, has started its regular commercial operations. RWE, the project's developer, received the Hoegh Gannet floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in early 2023 and received its first cargo of LNG in February 2023, as agreed with ADNOC (United Arab Emirates) in 2022. The project, which started injecting gas into the German gas transmission system in March 2023, is the third LNG import terminal to be installed in the country.
In a first phase, the FSRU will be operated at Brunsbüttel Ports' existing dangerous goods jetty. A new jetty will be built for the project (construction in 2023) and the capacity of the terminal will be progressively raised from 3.5 bcm/year (due to infrastructural bottlenecks) to around 7.5 bcm/year.
