The German Federal Network Agency has completed the planning approval process for the last of seven sections of the Ultranet power line (Federal Network Agency press release, 31/10/2025).

  • Once operational, the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) line will transport electricity from North Rhine-Westphalia to Baden-Württemberg over a distance of approximately 342 km.
  • It will have a transmission capacity of 2 GW and operate at 380 kV.
  • The transmission system operators Amprion and TransnetBW are responsible for planning, constructing, and operating the Ultranet.

The agency has indicated that the line is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2026.
