Germany allocates €4.6bn to 23 green hydrogen projects (1.4 GW)

The German Ministry of Economy and Climate Protection (BMWK) has announced the allocation of €4.6bn to finance 23 green hydrogen projects. The projects are part of the third Hy2Infra wave of the IPCEI Hydrogen (Important Projects of Common European Interest), which was approved by the EU Commission in February 2024.

Covering the entire value chain, the projects consider up to 1.4 GW of green hydrogen production capacity powered by renewable energies, the efficient storage of up to 370 GWh of hydrogen, the construction of a 2,000 km pipeline to transport hydrogen, and the use of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) for the transportation of about 1.8 kt/year of hydrogen. Part of the funding is supported by the German Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP), which is financed by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility NextGenerationEU. Beneficiaries include Enertrag, RWE, BP, Thyssengas, Air Liquide and Gasunie.

The funding of the IPCEI-Hy2Infra-Welle projects is part of the National Hydrogen Strategy, which was updated by the German government in 2023, aiming to have an electrolysis capacity of at least 10 GW and the development of more than 1,800 km of converted and newly built hydrogen pipelines by 2030.
