According to the German Federal Network Agency, the installed renewable power capacity in Germany increased by nearly 20 GW (+12%) to nearly 190 GW in 2024. Most of the renewable capacity additions were solar (+16.2 GW to 99 GW at the end of 2024) with 2/3 of the additions consisting in rooftop installations. Onshore wind capacity grew at a slower pace than in 2023, increasing by 2.5 GW (including 0.7 GW of decommissioned capacity); however, permits were issued for nearly 15 GW of onshore wind during the year, i.e. 90% more than in 2023. Around 0.7 GW of offshore wind capacity went into operation, i.e., twice as much as in 2023, raising Germany's offshore wind capacity to 9.2 GW. Biomass installations grew at the same pace as in 2023 (+110 MW) to approximatively 9 GW.
Overall, renewables generated around 255 TWh in 2024, covering almost 60% of Germany's power generation, in a context of record low coal-fired power generation.
