German TSO 50Hertz targets 100% renewables power by 2032

German transmission system operator 50Hertz has set itself the target of getting the electricity demand in its grid area covered and securely integrated with 100% renewable energies by 2032. In 2019, the annual average share of renewables attained about 60%. To achieve this, 50Hertz will employ new approaches to system operation, implement consistent digitisation of the integration of an increasingly volatile electricity supply and take part in innovative models of sector coupling to generate heat and produce hydrogen from "green" power.

The company supplies eastern German states as well as the city states of Berlin and Hamburg with electricity. 50Hertz is controlled by Eurogrid GmbH, indirectly owned by Belgium TSO Elia (80%) and German state-owned development bank KfW (20%). It operates around 110 000 km of lines and is responsible for the connection of the offshore wind parks in the Baltic Sea.
