German project developers apply for Stade LNG import terminal project

German companies LNG Stade and Dow have formally applied to the federal government of German for funding to support the Stade LNG import project on the Elbe river in Lower Saxony (Germany). The proposed terminal would be able to process 4 bcm/year of gas, with the possibility for an extension up to 12 bcm/year, enough to cover up to 15% of Germany's entire natural gas demand. The initial 4 bcm/year phase would require an investment of €400m to €500m. The first phase of the project is slated for completion by the end of 2020.

Stade is not the only location for a potential German LNG import terminal and two other projects are underway: one in Brunsbüttel (Schleswig-Holstein) and one bunkering project (no regasification capacity) in Rostock (Mecklemburg-West Pomerania). Brunsbüttel LNG is slated to have a 5 bcm/year import capacity and the final investment decision (FID) is expected in 2019, with a commissioning date set for 2022.
