German LNG terminal project starts Open Season

The Dutch natural gas group Gasunie, the Dutch tank storage company Vopak and the German service provider of tank terminals Oiltanking will establish a joint venture (JV) for the construction of a German LNG import terminal on a build, own and operate (BOO) basis. Partners have launched an Open Season to examine the customer demand in detail and the market interest.

The facility would be built in Brunsbüttel near Hamburg. No available capacity estimate of the project has been provided so far (depending on the results of the open season). Final investment decision is expected in 2019 and the terminal could be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2022.

The idea of a new LNG terminal project is supported by the German Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) and the German transmission system operators (TSOs), which mentioned it in its draft scenario framework for the Gas Network Development Plan (NDP) 2018-2028.
