German group KGAL takes part in Lubmin hydrogen hub (1 GW)

The KGAL ESPF 6 Energy Transition Fund has partnered with project initiator PtX Development and project planner GP JOULE to invest in a green hydrogen project at Lubmin, a Baltic Sea port in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (northern Germany), which would be one of Europe's largest hydrogen hubs.

The project will be built on the site of a former nuclear power plant and would be developed in phases, with an electrolysis capacity of 210 MW in a first phase scheduled for completion in 2028  and a further 840 MW added in stages during the second phase. The up to 1,050 MW electrolysis capacity would be fuelled by up to 2.8 GW of offshore wind. The project would benefit from a direct connection to the German hydrogen core network, which will transport hydrogen from Lubmin via Bitterfeld and the chemical hub of Frankfurt-Höchst to southern economic centres such as Stuttgart. Four other projects are planned in Lubmin, which could create a total electrolysis capacity of around 4 GW.

The KGAL ESPF 6 impact fund is already investing in the Arcadia e-kerosene production plant in Denmark.
