German government will promote Power-to-X technologies

The federal Ministry of Environment of Germany has presented a programme for the use of electricity-based energies (Power-to-X or PtX), which would be important to accelerate the decarbonation of the German economy. Renewable electricity can be used directly for power generation, for transports or for industry. PtX energies could be an important substitute for fossil fuels in other sectors, such as aircraft or freighters, or in some industrial processes (in the cement, chemicals, steel branches).

The Ministry's action plan for PtX is based on four pillars. It will initiate a Stakeholder Dialogue with research, industry, environmental associations, and politics in order to promote exchange and networking. It will support pilot projects, such as the ones launched in Brazil (2017-2022) and in Morocco (2019-2020) under the International Climate Initiative (IKI). It will build and operate a demonstration plant for PtX in the Lusatia region, in eastern Germany. Finally, it will expand the international activities of PtX.
