Georgia regulator approves Vogtle nuclear project completion (US)

The Public Service Commission (PSC) of Georgia (United States) has approved Georgia Power's plans to complete the construction of units 3 and 4 at the Vogtle nuclear power plant.

The Vogtle plant, jointly owned by GPC (45.7%), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (30%), the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (22.7%) and Dalton Utilities (1.6%), has two operating pressurized water reactors manufactured by Westinghouse rated 1,215 MW each, which were commissioned in 1987 and 1989. Two additional AP1000 units rated 1,117 MW each, Vogtle-3 and Vogtle-4, are under construction. The construction has been moving forward uninterrupted even since the Westinghouse bankruptcy filing in March 2017.

In October 2017, the US Department of Energy (DoE) announced that it would offer new conditional loan guarantees worth US$3.7bn to support the construction of Vogtle-3 and Vogtle-4, of which US$1.67bn for GPC. Units 3 and 4 are due to reach commercial operation in November 2021 and November 2022, respectively.
