Georgia Power (United States) releases a draft RfP for 1 GW of renewables

Georgia Power, an affiliate of the US energy group Southern Company, has released its draft Request for Proposals (RfP) for approximately 1,030 MW of new utility-scale renewable capacity that will enter into service in 2023 and 2024. The bidding will be open from the first quarter of 2022 to proposals larger than 3 MW, including renewable-coupled storage projects, and located in the continental United States.

Earlier in November 2021, the company announced plans to close most of its coal-fired units at Scherer (3.6 GW), Bowen (3.5 GW), and Wansley (1.9 GW) by 2028. The exact timing of the planned coal plant closings in Georgia will be subject to approval by the state Public Service Commission in its review of Georgia Power’s next Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). Georgia Power has more than 2,700 MW of renewable capacity already online and an additional 2,700 MW due to come online by the end of 2024.
