Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, has started construction of two combined-cycle natural gas units with a combined capacity of nearly 1.5 GW at Plant Bowen in Georgia, US while also advancing plans for a 500 MW BESS at the site (Georgia Power press release, 31/07/2026).
Located in Bartow County, Plant Bowen currently operates four coal-fired units with a combined capacity of 3.37 GW. The project has gotten approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission. Georgia Power said the new gas-fired units and battery storage system is expected to enhance grid reliability and operational flexibility as demand continues to increase.
The project is being supported by a USD26.5bn loan granted to the Southern Company in February 2026 by the US Department of Energy to support eligible power generation, transmission and grid modernisation projects in Georgia and Alabama.
Beyond Plant Bowen, Georgia Power recently completed the 49.5 MW Moody Battery Facility near Valdosta, Georgia, and is currently building a 260 MW BESS in Jefferson County, scheduled for completion in 2027.
