The Georgia Public Service Commission has approved seven solar power purchase agreements from Georgia Power totalling 1.14 GW under the CARES 2023 and CARES 2025 procurement programmes (Georgia Power press release, 10/09/2026).
The projects comprise 78 MW in Appling County, 130 MW in Decatur County, 194 MW in Jefferson County, 200 MW in Sumter County, 150 MW in Warren County, 185 MW in Emanuel County and 200 MW in Irwin County. Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2029.
The approvals follow 1.07 GW of CARES 2023 projects cleared in September 2025, making the programme the largest single solar procurement in Georgia Power’s history. CARES allows eligible customers to subscribe to a proportional share of renewable energy production.
Georgia Power has also opened enrolment for its CARES Customer Identified Resource programme, which could support up to 3 GW of additional renewable capacity through utility-scale and distributed generation projects proposed by eligible commercial and industrial customers.
As of 2025, the US had approximately 478 GW of installed renewable capacity, representing around 34% of its total installed capacity (Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 data).
