Georgia Power reaches milestones in Vogtle-3-4 nuclear projects (US)

Georgia Power has reached milestones at the Vogtle nuclear power plant expansion near Waynesboro, Georgia (United States), which aims to add two AP1000 units, Vogtle-3 and Vogtle-4, rated 1,117 MW each, at the Vogtle nuclear power plant. The company has placed the second of three containment vessel rings placed for Unit 4, has set the fourth and final core make-up tank for the two reactors and has set the in-containment refueling water storage tank (IRWST) inside the Unit 4 containment vessel.

The Vogtle nuclear expansion project is led by project developer Georgia Power (part of the Southern Company group, 45.7% of the plant), Oglethorpe Power Corporation (30%), the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia (22.7%) and held by Dalton Utilities (1.6%). The project has been hit by years of delays and costs escalations, with the construction cost now exceeding US$20bn. Construction was initially led by Westinghouse, which filed for bankruptcy in March 2017. However, construction has been moving forward uninterrupted even since then and the units are expected to be commissioned in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
