Malaysian clean energy provider Gentari and engineering and construction firm Gamuda have partnered to develop 1.5 GW of renewable energy capacity to meet the rising power demands of hyperscale data centers in Malaysia.
Through their respective subsidiaries named Gentari Renewables and Gamuda Energy, the companies plan to build solar PV power plants integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS). These projects are being implemented under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS).
As of the end of 2024, Malaysia had an installed solar capacity of around 2 GW, accounting for approximately 5% of total electricity generation capacity. The country has set ambitious targets to achieve 40% renewable capacity in its power mix by 2035, and to reach a 17% share of renewables in the overall energy mix by 2040.
