GE Vernova announces start of operations on a 780 MW CCGT plant in Indonesia

The US company GE Vernova has announced the start of commercial operation for the 780 MW Tambak Lorok combined cycle (CCGT) power plant Block 3, located in Tanjung Mas, Central Java, Indonesia.

The Tambak Lorok power plant, owned by PLN Indonesia Power, is powered by GE Vernova’s 9HA.02 gas turbine and a STF-D650 steam turbine. It will be able to supply power to approximately 5 million Indonesian households. GE Vernova has also signed a 15-year service agreement to manage all aspects of the project’s lifecycle, training and maintenance management.

The Tambak Lorok CCGT complex comprises three other blocks. Tambak Lorok-1 (376 MW), Tambak Lorok-2 (958 MW, four turbines) and Tambak Lorok-4 (780 MW).

As of end-2023, gas represented over 23% of Indonesia’s installed capacity with nearly 22 GW, far below the share of coal (55%). It also represented 18% of Indonesia’s power generation (against 68% for coal). In September 2024, Indonesia's state-owned power utility PT PLN announced plans to convert 800 coal-fired steam power plants to gas in order to reach Indonesia’s target to achieve net zero emissions by 2060.
