GE and Iberdrola launch 766 MW gas-fired power plant in Mexico

The US company GE Vernova (subsidiary of General Electric) and Iberdrola Mexico (subsidiary of the Spanish energy group, Iberdrola) announced the start of commercial operation of the 766-MW Topolobampo III power plant located in the Mexican State of Sinaloa. The facility is powered by two 7HA.01 gas turbines and a D650 steam turbine from GE Vernova, as well as three H53 generators and advanced plant control systems featuring GE Vernova’s integrated Mark* VIe Distributed Control System (DCS). The plant also counts with two Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) that were provided by CERREY, the local licensee for GE Vernova’s HRSG technology. The project expects to produce the equivalent energy to power more than 1.6 million homes in the country, and to provide reliable, efficient and flexible power to bring renewable energy sources to the Mexican grid.

At the end of 2022, Mexico had an installed capacity of 89.3 GW with 45% of it consisting of gas. The country targets to doubling its renewable energy generation capacity, increasing solar and wind capacity from its current 15 GW to 40 GW by 2030.
