The Russian oil and gas company Gazprom has announced it will start commercial gas production at the 2,000 bcm Kharasavey gas field, located on the Yamal peninsula (central-northern Russia) in 2024. Gazprom expects to produce 32 bcm/year of natural gas from the Siberian field. Currently, 100 gas wells (out of 167) have been drilled on the field. Construction is underway for a gas treatment unit, a booster compressor station, and a gas pipeline to connect the Kharasavey field to the Bovanenkovo gas field, which is located about 100 km south of Kharasavey. Bovanenkovo started production in 2012 and 595 wells out of 770 project wells are in operation.
In 2021, Gazprom gas production reached 515 bcm, a 14% increase compared to 2020. At the national level, Russia has proved natural gas reserves surpassing 47,800 bcm, and the country produced 791 bcm of gas in 2021 (+9.5% compared to 2020). According to preliminary estimates, Russia’s gas production fell by more than 13% in 2022.
