Gazprom still expects to commission NordStream 2 gas pipeline in 2021

Gazprom has reaffirmed its plan to commission the 55 bcm/year Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in 2021. The €9.5bn (US$11bn) Nord Stream 2 project is aimed at doubling the throughput of the current Nord Stream gas pipeline between Vyborg (Russia) and Greifswald (Germany), from 55 bcm/year to 110 bcm/year. It is developed by Gazprom (50%), Uniper, Shell, OMV, Wintershall and Engie (10% each). In January 2020, Russia had postponed its commissioning from mid-2020 to the end of 2020 or early 2021. Gazprom still has to build around 150 km of gas pipeline (120 km in Danish waters and less than 30 km in German waters).

The project is causing controversy as Germany would increase its dependence on Russian gas while bypassing Ukraine. The gas pipeline is also strongly opposed by the United States, which has imposed several rounds of sanctions on companies involved in the project.
