Russia’s state-owned oil and gas company Gazprom and its partner RusGazDobycha have started production at the Semakovskoye gas field in the Russian Arctic, which is estimated to have around 320 bcm of gas reserves, mostly concentrated in the waters of Taz Bay, which connects to the Kara Sea, in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
In the first phase of the project, gas production will come from 19 extended reach wells drilled from the shore into the offshore segment of the field. A gas treatment unit (CGTU) with a capacity of 7.5 bcm/year will process gas and a 122 km long gas pipeline will connect the field to Russia’s national gas transmission system. During the next stage of pre-development, gas production will be raised to its design level of 14.2 bcm/year.
In 2021, Russia produced 791 bcm of natural gas and exported nearly 244 bcm. The country has estimated gas reserves surpassing 47,800 bcm.
