GazelEnergie will close a 600 MW coal-fired plant in March 2022 (France)

GazelEnergie, an affiliate of the Czech energy group EPH, will shut down the 600 MW Emile Huchet-6 coal-fired plant in Saint-Avold in Moselle (eastern France) at the end of March 2022. The power plant will be converted into biomass power plant and a green hydrogen production site, under the terms of an agreement signed with Storengy (Engie group); the biomass-fired power plant is expected in 2024 and first hydrogen activities between 2026 and 2029.

Emile Huchet-6 is one of the last two coal-fired power plants in France. Two coal-fired units were stopped in 2014 and 2015 and two 433 MW gas-fired units (units 7 and 8) were sold to Total in late 2020. GazelEnergie shut down its 590 MW Gardanne-Meyreuil coal-fired power unit in late 2020.

EDF will continue to operate its 1.2 GW Cordemais coal-fired power plant until at least 2024, and the commissioning of the EPR nuclear reactor at Flamanville, in Normandy. According to the multi-annual energy plan to 2028 (Programmation pluriannuelle de l’énergie, PPE), France was expected to end coal-fired generation in 2022.
