Gasunie, Vopak and Oiltanking consider LNG terminal in Germany

The European Commission (EC) has endorsed the creation of a joint venture between the Dutch gas company Gasunie, the Dutch oil group Vopak and its German counterpart Oiltanking, considering that the proposed transaction would not raise competition concerns because the three companies do not operate in the same regions and are not active in the same product lines.

The joint-venture plans to build and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in Northern Germany. In January 2017, Gasunie announced plans for a mid-sized LNG project near Hamburg. The regasification project would be located on the River Elbe, at Brunsbüttel or Stade (north of Hamburg) and would have a capacity of 2.7-4.1 bcm/year (2-3 Mt/year).

Gasunie is a gas infrastructure group, which owns and operates the Dutch transmission system as well as a LNG terminal in the Netherlands. Vopak is an Dutch tank storage provider, which operates two LNG import terminals (one in the Netherlands and one in Mexico). Oiltanking is a German storage services provider for dry bulk, petroleum products and chemical gases.
