Gasunie (an energy network operator active in the Netherlands and the northern part of Germany) and Vopak (a Dutch O&G company) have taken the final investment decision to expand GATE terminal’s storage and regasification capacity, involving additional regasification capacity of 4 bcm/year and a new 180,000 cm LNG storage tank. This capacity has already been leased out through long-term commercial agreements and should be operational by the second half of 2026. The total investment of around €350m will be financed with 15% equity and 85% non-recourse project financing, expected to be finalised by the end of 2023.
Commissioned in 2011, the GATE (Gas Access to Europe) terminal in in South Holland Province, Netherlands, in the port of Rotterdam, has currently a regasification capacity of 16 bcm/year. Gasunie and Vopak, the terminal's founders, are boosting LNG import capacity in the Netherlands due to the loss of Russian gas and to address gas scarcity in Europe. This expansion aligns with Vopak's LNG infrastructure growth strategy and contributes to energy supply security.
