Swiss renewable project developer Galileo has secured consents for two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the North and Centre-South power market zones of Italy (Galileo press release, 07/10/2026). Approvals concern a 125 MW/1,000 MWh project and a 125 MW/500 MWh project, totalling 250 MW/1,500 MWh in storage capacity.
Galileo has a development pipeline of more than 3 GW in Italy, covering utility-scale solar PV, BESS, and onshore and offshore wind, and anticipates consent for a further 100 MW BESS project in the coming weeks. Its project pipeline reaches 17 GW across Europe.
Battery electricity storage systems (BESS) additions in Italy have surged in the last two years, with over 2.1 GW installed in 2024 and 1.7 GW in 2025, reaching a total capacity of 7.4 GW/17.9 GWh.
