Fugro awarded geotechnical survey for a 2.2 GW offshore wind project in Australia

The Dutch geo-data company Fugro has been awarded a contract to carry out offshore geotechnical site investigations for Australia’s first offshore wind project. The up to 2.2 GW Star of the South offshore wind project, located off the coast of Gippsland, in the state of Victoria (south-eastern Australia), will be able to supply around 20% of the energy needs  of Victoria and power around 1.2 million Australian households.

Pending approvals, the project is planning to start construction around the middle of the decade and is expected to comprise up to 200 wind turbines. It is expected to be commissioned by 2028.

In March 2022, the government of Victoria unveiled new offshore wind targets, seeking to start offshore wind generation as soon as 2028 and to reach 2 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030, 4 GW by 2035 and 9 GW by 2040. The state aims to cover 50% of its power generation with renewables by 2030.
