Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a subsidiary of Abdul Latif Jameel (ALJ) has unveiled plans to develop more than 2.9 GW/11 GWh of BESS capacity in Italy (ALJ press release, 09/06/2026).
The projects are being developed as standalone battery storage facilities designed to provide grid services and support the national electricity system. The plants are spread across several Italian regions, with Sicily (745 MW across five projects), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (663 MW across three projects), and Puglia (445 MW across four projects) accounting for the largest share of planned capacity. The remaining 966 MW is distributed across Molise (242 MW), Lombardy (201 MW), Marche (175 MW), Tuscany (146 MW), Emilia-Romagna (96 MW), Campania (58 MW), and Sardinia (48 MW).
The portfolio is already in an advanced stage of development and is expected to reach ready-to-build status between 2026 and 2029. Once operational, the projects are expected to improve the resilience of Italy’s electricity system prior to the rollout of MACSE, the storage procurement mechanism established by Terna, the Italian TSO.
According to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research, Italy’s BESS additions have surged in the last two years, reaching a total capacity of 7.4 GW/17.9 GWh.
