Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has unveiled plans to strengthen its portfolio in Spain with the development of more than 1.2 GW/5 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS), expected to reach “Ready to Build” status between by 2027. The developer will combine standalone BESS and solar-plus-storage facilities, hybridised with some of its Spanish PV projects.
The projets, some of them already at an advanced stage in development, are located in the following regions: Andalusia, Catalonia, Cantabria, and Extremadura, the latter being the "central axis of this expansion", with projects such as:
- the San Serván 220 complex, to be co-located with a 56 MW/225 MWh BESS, and the Solanilla PV plant, to be paired with an 18 MW/72 MWh BESS. Both will be ready to build in the first quarter of 2026, following approval by decree.
- The Carmonita cluster will integrate 4 plants totalling 531 MW/2,415 MWh in Extremadura.
In Catalonia, 334 MW/1,336 MWh are planned across six battery storage facilities located in different areas across the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona.
