French power transmission grid operator plans to invest €15bn by 2024

France's power transmission grid operator RTE has unveiled its 10-year development plan and estimates its investments needs at €1.5bn/year over the 2015-2024 period, i.e. a total investment of €15bn. Two thirds of the annual investments will be dedicated to development, focusing on power interconnections. RTE will strengthen its power interconnection with Spain in winter 2015 and is considering new interconnections with Spain, Ireland and the United Kingdom (up to 10 GW of interconnection capacity). RTE will also invest €400m/year to renew ageing infrastructures and €100m in smart grids. Over the 2015-2024 period, RTE plans to build or upgrade more than 2,000 km of high voltage power lines: 1,000 km of new underground or marine transmission lines will be built, while 700 km of existing 400 kV lines will be strengthened and 400 km of underground and 100 km of overhead lines (225 kV) will be built. The group has identified 365 projects to be carried out (56% of which on substations, 27% on marine or underground lines and 17% on overhead lines).
