The French National Assembly extends CNR's hydropower concession to 2041

The French National Assembly has approved the extension of the concession for the power utility Compagnie nationale du Rhône (CNR) until 2041. The concession was due to expire at the end of 2023 and extending it until 2041 will make its 19 hydropower plants on the Rhône River reach an average operation length of 75 years. The text did not require a State aid notification to the European Commission. It must now be voted by the Senate.

CNR is owned by Engie (49.97%), the French state-owned financial institution CDC (33.20%) and local government bodies (16.83%). The company, which is tasked with the development of the Rhône River, operates 47 hydropower plants as well as solar and wind projects with a total capacity of 3,961 MW. CNR generated 15 TWh in 2020.
