Freja Offshore gets key permit for its 2.5 GW Mareld wind project off Sweden

Freja Offshore, a joint venture between Hexicon and Mainstream Renewable Power, has obtained a Natura 2000 permit for its 2.5 GW Mareld offshore wind project, to be built off the coast of Bohuslän, in the Swedish economic zone. The Natura 2000 permit, which is one of three permits required for construction, was awarded to Freja Offshore by the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland.

Freja Offshore’s next step is to obtain government approval for the two remaining permits, under the Swedish Economic Zone Act (SEZ) and the Continental Shelf Act (KSL). Once completed, the Mareld project is expected to generate 12 TWh/year of electricity, enough to supply power to about 2 million Swedish households.

At the end of 2023, Sweden only had 193 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (against over 16 GW of onshore wind capacity). The country aims to reach an entirely "fossil-free" electricity system by 2040.
