France’s Voltalia expands Tunisian portfolio with 132 MW solar project

French renewable energy developer Voltalia has secured a 132 MW solar project in the Gabès region, located in south-eastern Tunisia (Voltalia press release, 29/01/2026). According to the company’s press release, this new 132 MW project brings Voltalia’s total capacity of projects expected to enter construction in the country to nearly 400 MW. Construction is scheduled to start in 2027, with commissioning planned for 2028.

The project is intended to support Tunisia’s national energy objectives, notably increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 30% by 2030, compared with just 6% as of the end of April 2025, according to the Energy Outlook Observatory, an official body attached to Tunisia’s ministry in charge of energy.

Under Tunisia’s Energy Sector Strategy through 2035 (published in 2023), the country aims to reach 8,530 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2035, including 4,850 MW by 2030. Tunisia is also targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.

As of 2024, Tunisia’s installed wind capacity stood at 245 MW, while solar capacity reached 773 MW at year-end, representing a 53% increase compared to 2023 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
