According to preliminary estimates released by the CITEPA, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in France declined by 2.5% in 2022 to 408 MtCO2eq, a 6.2% decrease compared to 2019. Most of the decrease is due to a nearly 15% fall in emissions in the residential and service sector, thanks to a mild weather and energy conservation efforts in the fourth quarter of the year (up to 35% less emissions in October 2022 compared to the same period of 2021).
GHG emissions from the transport sector grew by 2% to 129 MtCO2eq in 2022 but remained 4.8% below their 2019 level, while emissions from agriculture remained stable at 81 MtCO2eq. Emissions from the manufacturing industry and from the construction sector dipped by nearly 8% to 72 MtCO2eq, while those from the energy sector rose by more than 8% to 47 MtCO2eq.
In 2020, GHG emissions had fallen by 9.6% due to the COVID-19 pandemic (that reduced emissions in the transport sector by 16.5%) and a mild winter, before recovering in 2021 (+6.4%)
