France's gas consumption increased slightly in 2017

The French largest gas transmission system operator GRTgaz has reported a wholesale gas consumption rise by 0.4% on its network in 2017, up to 465 TWh. The gas consumption of industrial customers increased by 5.5% up to 190 TWh, mainly driven by the gas-fired power sector: in 2017, the power sector consumed 55 TWh of gas, a 20% increased compared with 46 TWh in 2016 (and only 8 TWh in 2014). This record can be explained by the lower French nuclear fleet's availability and the historically low hydropower generation in 2017. However, the consumption of customers connected to the distribution networks (residential and industry) declined by 2.9% down to 275 TWh, due to mild temperatures.

Biomethane injections in the GRTgaz's gas network doubled in 2017, with around 408 GWh injected via 44 sites (mostly agricultural). The ambition of French gas operators is to increase the share of renewable gas to 90 TWh in the French gas mix by 2030.
