France's first offshore wind power produced at Saint-Nazaire's 480 MW park

The Saint-Nazaire 480 MW offshore wind park has been connected to the French power grid and produced first power from offshore wind in France. The park, operated by Eolien Maritime France (EMF, a joint venture between EDF Renewables and EIH, a subsidiary of the Canadian companies Enbridge and CPP Investments), will consist of 80 wind turbines, enough to cover the annual domestic consumption of 700,000 people by the end of 2022. So far, 27 turbines have already been installed.

EDF and its partners are also building three offshore wind projects in France, namely 498 MW Fécamp (expected in 2023), 450 MW Courseulles-sur-Mer (2024) and 24 MW Provence Grand Large (Port Saint Louis du Rhône, 2023). In addition, a consortium of EDF, Innogy and Enbridge was selected in 2019 to buil the 500 MW Dunkerque offshore wind project (expected in 2027à.

France’s offshore wind capacity is nascent, but the country plans to reach a 5 GW capacity in offshore wind by 2028 (33 GW for onshore wind, up from 18.8 GW in 2021).
