France's Engie posted a net income of €3.7bn in 2021

The French energy group Engie has released its 2021 results, posting a net income of €3.7bn (compared to a €1.5bn loss in 2020) driven by energy prices and a higher availability of its Belgian nuclear power plants, which reached 92%. The group commissioned 3 GW of renewable capacities in 2021, including 1.8 GW of wind and 1.2 GW of solar projects, and it plans to add 4 GW of new renewable capacity per year on average by 2025 to reach 50 GW of renewable capacity. The share of renewables in its portfolio reached 34% in 2021 compared to 31% in 2020. In 2021, the group generated 15 TWh of hydropower (stable on 2020) and 47 TWh of nuclear power (+30%).

Engie forecasts higher performances in 2023-2024 as growth in renewables and Energy Solutions segments would counterbalance lower results from the phase-out of Belgian nuclear capacity by 2025. The company owns and operates, through its affiliate Engie Electrabel, two nuclear plants in Belgium: Doel (2.9 GW), near Antwerp, and Tihange (3 GW), near Liège.
