France unveils a €4bn scheme to bolster carbon-free hydrogen production

The French Ministry of Energy Transition has unveiled an initiative with a budget of €4bn to bolster the hydrogen sector. This program's primary objective is to facilitate the acquisition of electrolysers by manufacturers and enable the cost-effective production of carbon-free hydrogen, which can be of nuclear or renewable origin. The scheme will bridge the financial gap between the price of carbon-free hydrogen and that of hydrogen derived from fossil fuels. This carbon-free hydrogen will find applications in a range of heavy industrial processes, eliminating the reliance on fossil fuels for activities such as steel and aluminium production as well as fertiliser manufacturing.

A forthcoming decree will outline the specifics of subsidies available to manufacturers looking to decarbonise their production processes with hydrogen, including support for both electrolyser acquisition and long-term operational expenses. The €4bn fund will be deployed through annual calls for tenders over the next four years, aimed at fostering the growth of decarbonised hydrogen producers employing electrolysis technology.
