France selects the site of Bugey to build two EPR2 reactors

The French Nuclear Policy Council has selected the Bugey site, with the support of local elected representatives, for the installation of the third pair of EPR2 reactors, after Penly (where EDF aims to start construction in 2025) and Gravelines. The location of the first phase of the EPR2 construction program has now been decided. Technical studies and analyses will continue on the Tricastin site with a view to hosting future nuclear reactors.

In February 2022, France unveiled its energy strategy to 2030, including a recovery plan for nuclear power. As part of the plan, France is expected to build 6 new EPRs (European Pressured Reactors II) by 2035 and to launch studies for the construction of 8 additional EPRs as well as SMRs (Small Modular Reactors), to attain 25 GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050.
