France plans to extend power tariff to early 2025

The French government has decided to extend the shield on residential electricity tariffs until early 2025 to limit increases in electricity bills. The scheme, which was due to end by December 2023, will remain in place because market prices for electricity remain high, as EDF’s nuclear fleet is affected by production difficulties in particular due to corrosion problems. Regulated tariff for electricity rose by 4% in 2022 and 15% in 2023.

However, the shield on gas tariff will stop at the end of 2023, because prices have returned the pre-crisis level. Indeed, natural gas prices have fallen significantly since the unprecedented peak of 2022, caused by the war in Ukraine and the end of Russian gas exports to Western Europe.
