France may struggle to meet 2020 renewable targets

According to statistics released by the Commissariat général au développement durable (CGDD), France has succeeded in raising the share of renewable energies in its final energy consumption, from an average 9.2% in 2005 to 14.9% in 2015. However, the country may have difficulties to meet its 2020 renewable targets, lagging behind its 2015 mid-term targets.

Indeed, to reach a global renewable share of 23% of final energy consumption by 2020, France should already cover 17% of its final consumption with renewables in 2015. The share of renewables in power generation was slightly below the target in 2015 (18.9% compared to an expected 20.5% in 2015 and to 27% in 2020) and much below the target for heating and cooling consumption (18.8%, compared to an expected 24% in 2015 and 33% in 2020). However, the share of renewables in the energy consumption of transport exceeded the 2015 target (7.7%), at 8.5% (10.5% target for 2020).

By 2030, renewables should cover 32% of final energy consumption in France (40% of electricity generation, 38% of heating and cooling consumption and 15% of transport consumption).
