France launches call for interest for CCUS to help industries abate emissions

The French Ministry of Industry has launched a call for interest for carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) at various sites across France to help carbon-intensive industries abate emissions. The objective is to help top emitters like cement producers, steelworks and aluminum factories capture CO2 emissions.

In this first phase, interested companies will have until the end of June 2024 to apply, with the main storage targets being either the last of the oil well operators in France or owners of exhausted and depleted wells. Subsidies and investment aids will be granted for machines that integrate CCUS technology.

The second phase of the French CCUS strategy is expected to last until December 2024. It will involve the French Government testing the various sites for capture and storage capacity. The ministry plans to put to the test four or five CO2 storage projects from the beginning of 2025 in former French oil fields. If the tests are successful, the first carbon storage should be able to begin by 2027.

France unveiled its draft CCUS strategy in June 2023, in which the country announced it would launch a support scheme through Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfD) granted through competitive bidding to support industrial decarbonisation projects. France’s potential for CO2 sequestration for the industrial sector is estimated to be between 4 and 8.5 MtCO2/year by 2030 and between 15 and 20 MtCO2/year by 2050.
