The French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) has approved EDF's objectives of the first generic phase of the review to extend the lifespan of its four 1,450 MW nuclear reactors (N4 type reactors) located at the Chooz and Civaux nuclear power plants. This review aims to establish the conditions for the continued operation of these reactors until they reach 40 years of age. While acknowledging the acceptability of EDF's general objectives for the review, ASN has asked for further completion or clarification, similar to the requirements for the 900 and 1,300 MW reactors.
According to French law, nuclear installations must undergo a review every ten years to assess risks, considering factors such as the site's condition, operational experience, and evolving knowledge, including climate change. EDF has planned a two-stage review for these four reactors, starting with a "generic" phase covering common subjects and followed by a "specific" review for each reactor between 2030 and 2033. Upon completion of the generic phase, ASN will issue a position statement on the adequacy of EDF's planned modifications and the achievement of the periodic review objectives. Additional provisions may be requested from EDF, if necessary.
