FPL files plans to stop 1.3 GW St. Johns River coal-fired plant (US)

US power utility Florida Power & Light (part of the NextEra Energy group) has filed a petition with the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) for approval to close its 1.3 GW St. Johns River Power Park by the end of 2017.

The SJRPP power plant consists of two 650 MW coal-fired units commissioned in 1987 and 1988, and is jointly owned by FPL and JEA, the municipally-owned electric provider for the City of Jacksonville. The power plant is no longer economical to operate - the plant is even one of the highest-cost generating facilities to operate and maintain for both FPL's and JEA's systems - and FPL is increasingly focusing on gas-fired and renewable power generation. The company has also filed for approval for its planned FPL Dania Beach Clean Energy Center, a 1,200 MW gas-fired power project expected in mid-2022.

In late 2016, FPL shut down the Cedar Bay plant in Jacksonville. The company will also close the Indiantown CHP plant in Martin County by the end of 2019.
