FPL faces legal hurdles over its Turkey Point nuclear project (US)

A District Court of Appeal in Miami, Florida (United States), has reversed a 2014 decision to approve the construction of two 1,100 MW reactors, named Turkey Point-6 and -7, at a cost of US$24bn, at Florida Power & Light's (FPL's) nuclear plant in Miami-Dade county. The court considered that the governor's approval failed to protect the eastern Everglades and requested the project plans to be reviewed to take into account local developmental regulations, comprehensive plans and the applicable environmental regulations.

The project includes two 1.1 GW reactors and two new transmission lines: a 230 kV line stretching from Cutler Bay, Pinecrest, South Miami and Coral Gables to a substation in Coconut Grove and a 500 kV line along the western edge of the county, adjacent to Everglades National Park. The two reactors are not expected to be commissioned before 2027-2028 (delayed from 2022 and 2023).
