The Department of the Interior (United States) has approved of the Revolution Wind offshore wind project, set to be installed off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Estimated to be fully operational by 2025, the project should provide 304 MW of wind power to the state of Connecticut and 400 MW to Rhode Island, having a total installed capacity of 704 MW provided by 65 wind turbines. Owned by Ørsted (50%) and Eversource (50%), Revolution Wind is the fourth project approved in the country, after Vineyard Wind (800 MW) in Massachusetts, South Fork Wind (132 MW) in the Rhode Island-New York area and Ocean Wind 1 (1,100 MW) in New Jersey.
The United States currently has an onshore wind capacity of 141 GW, accounting for 12% of the country's capacity mix. No large scale offshore wind project is currently opperationnal. The government aims to add 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030.
